Elementary’s first Honors assemblies of the 2013-2014 school year took place during these last few weeks. These events mark the beginning of a new set of goals and academic highlights for Interamericano’s whole student body.
On October 28, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades had their assembly for the first bimester of this school year. Students whose lowest grade was above 85 in each academic subject, received an Honor Roll certificate, signed their name on the recognition posters and had their pictures taken for the school website. During this event there was a huge crowd, filled with dozens of proud parents and well behaved students. As is custom, the ceremony ceremony started with the entrance of the flags. Students who bring in these civic figures receive this honor by displaying great behavior and super classroom achievement. They are nominated by their classroom teachers.

Bringing in the Guatemalan Flag was Veroncia Pagua, the United States Flag by Eliya Cohen and the Flag of Colegio Interamericano by Alexia Monteros.
Silvia de Diaz, Assistant Elementary Principal, gave the monthly announcements. She spoke on how proud the whole Elementary staff was of the recent MAP testing period. Teachers reported great effort from the students and there are high-hope for the scores. Fall Festivals, Halloween and Thanksgiving were also discussed, giving students ample time to prepare for the different activities to be held in the coming months.

Lastly, Mr. Bellemare shared a few tips with the alumni on how to get on the Honor Roll more readily. He also spoke on how proud he was of the students who received an award that day. The principal suggests setting goals and making a plan on improving. He remarked “If you have a plan then improvement is possible.”

Similarly, on November 4th , Grades 3, 4 and 5 had their honor assembly for the first time in the present school year. Announcements were done by Silvia de Diaz, Assistant Principal. During this time she explained upcoming events to the student body and got spirits high for our extremely exciting Family Day. This event marks a great opportunity for Interamericano students to participate in all of the day’s activities, specially prepared by OPAI, and win some massive prizes in the OPAI (Organización de Padres de Alumnos Colegio Interamericano) raffle. The parent led organization will also be organizing Thanksgiving activities with homeroom teachers.

Later, Mr. Bellemare talked more in-depth to the kids about MAP testing. He explaned how students in North America, Central America and South America take the MAP test at roughly the same time. The test is a good way for Interamericano to determine the school’s academic level, when compared with other regional institutions. MAP scores will be given out stakeholders as soon as the school receives them.

Mr. Bellemare recommended students set goals and figure out a plan to carry them out. If each part of Elementary carries out their job, then at the end of the next bimester, the school will see even more people receive awards during similar ceremonies.
