The Escuela para Padres (EPPs) committee has been a parent run Interamericano organization, focused on offering stakeholders some of the most recent updates in education, psychology and technology. Their efforts have been well received at Interamericano. With each passing activity the committee has grown stronger and has consolidated a larger and more cohesive group of parents, eager to learn more about the latest trends.

To this end, on Tuesday February 4, 2014, EPPs invited famed child psychologist and writer Guido Aguilar. Upon being invited to give a keynote conference on Values, Aguilar developed a list of 40 tips. This series of helpful guidelines were meant to enable contemporary parents to raise their children in the ever-evolving environment of the second decade of the twenty first century.

Guido Aguilar has worked with several Interamericano students over the years and has always had a superb relationship with this institution.

After a brief introduction by our Academic Director, Wallace Ting, Aguilar proceed to address the audience with determination and humor. His visually-driven “Values: 40 tips for contemporary parents” keynote conference gave a great number of insights to the mind of one of the most recognized Guatemalan psychologist to date. For example, the author suggested “Educate by doing (Tip 13)”. In this scenario he asked parents to read and discuss literature if they want the child to develop reading habits, to be assertive in what they want and their children to follow suit and to keep calm when confronted with adversity, since the child will take cue from their attitudes toward most situations.

Assistance to Escuela para Padres activities has steady increased over the last few years, consolidating a net group of parent, always eager to get involved and learn more about their children’s education.

This is the second time Aguilar has visited Colegio Interamericano in the 2013-2014 school year. On January 6 he gave an interesting conference to our academic staff on the different characteristics he was found in working with students from our school. This riveting gave an interesting perspective to our teachers, as part of the Colegio Interamericano’s professional development week.

Parents were encouraged to ask questions to Aguilar, who gladly offered advice to participating audience members. This dynamic allowed for a more personal approach to Aguilar’s conference and tips.

On this occasion, his talk lasted for two hours and gave enough time for an interactive question and answer session with the school’s parents. After the conference ended, visitors had a chance to get some refreshments and talk further with the prominent author and psychologist. This, in turn, permitted the Escuela para Padres committee a moment to get feedback on the day’s conference and future plans for the parent-managed organization.
