The “Margarita Tejada” Foundation helps a total of 388 children with Down Syndrome go to school. Enrolled students receive classes, therapy and are constantly being prepared for a life outside of the safe walls of the establishment. The foundation also helps Down Syndrome students, who are unable to find a job, by offering a position in one of the projected workshops, run by collaboratos of Margarita Tejada.

In order to help out this noble cause, our alumi decided to open a “Best Buddies” chapter, a nongovernmental organization that brings together children with certain handicaps and children who are healthy, and regularly assisst the foundation. The program works in favor of raising awareness, that even though we are not born same, we can still respect each other and be friends. Participants from Interamericano will be partnered up with a “Buddy” from Margarita Tejada, and will then pledged to keep in touch at least once a week.

On Thursday, October 17th, 26 of our High School students visited Margarita Tejada for the first time. The trip was filled with games, laughs and fun activities. Foundation students like José Jorge, a superb singer , and Berta, an amateur biker, showcased some of their amazing talents to the visiting student body.

Next week “Best Buddies” will celebrate a big Halloween costume Party, and the paring up of volunteer with foundation member, called “Matches”, will take place. At this time, Colegio Interamericano will a need to select a “Best Buddies” Board, students who will be in charge of the organization of volunteers and relevant activities.
