Before starting up classes, Colegio Interamericano likes to give teachers an opportunity to get acquainted with the latest advances in technology and psychopedagogy. To this end, on Monday January 6, the school’s academic staff went through a series of interactive conferences and workshops. Activities were led by some of the most influential people in each subject matter, from both in and outside school personnel.

Local and foreign teachers took part in the day’s activities, growing a little bit closer in the process.

Thanks to the efforts of Escuela Para Padres, Guido Aguilar, renowned Guatemalan author and psychologist, visited our school on January 6th.  After a brief introduction by our academic Deputy Director of Academics, Wallace Ting, Aguilar gave a conference on the behavioral nature of Guatemalan students. Having worked with several members of our alumni, Aguilar gave teachers a proactive profile into the motivations and threats inside Colegio Interamericano’s student body.  His words offered unique insights into the minds and habits of our most precious community members.

Guido Aguilar is well known for having written several academically-acclaimed books on childhood behavior, such as “Como tratar los problemas de conducta en el Niño” and “Conductas problema en el Niño normal”

Deanna Williams, third grade teacher, and Phyllis Bellemare, middle school teacher, helped out as well. They gave an in-depth workshop on incorporating MAP (Measurements of Academic Progress) test scores into the classroom.  This highly functional and relevant update will come in handy during the following school year. Teachers will now be better equipped to address any negative tendencies that may come up in this year’s MAP test. This will the fifth year Colegio Interamericano takes the international standardized evaluation, which will continue to reinforce the positive traits that have made this school stand out in the last decade.

The workshops were held in the Middle School and Elementary Technology Labs. Here, teachers got a first hand glimpse into the future of MAP testing at Interamericano.

These conferences were held in both Spanish and in English. Offering an equal opportunity to our culturally diverse staff to get the most out of the well known health care specialist and one of the school’s most relevant and internationally-recognized standardized tests.

As the day’s activities drew to an end, teachers had a short opportunity to chat over a light snack and coffee. Letting them get pumped and ready to start 2014 on the right track.
